Vitamins for Acne

Vitamins for Acne

Many vitamins have been suggested for the treatment of acne. Vitamins for Acne treatment are debated by medical professionals in relation to their effectiveness.

Even though many medical professionals dispute using vitamin treatment for acne there is certainly some evidence to support that a selection of vitamins and combination’s of various vitamins can diminish and in some cases illuminate acne symptoms.

Your body needs complete nutrition to promote healthy skin and to avoid acne. There are a number of vitamins and minerals which are powerful antioxidants that are effective at flushing out free radicals and poisons from your body. A few even contain antibacterial effects and promote immunity, both of which can be essential in keeping your pores clean of clogging toxins along with added benefit of healing the damaged skin tissue.

It is vitally important that if you have a pre-existing medical condition or regularly take prescription medication that you consult with you medical professional before taking any vitamin supplement. Some vitamins for acne, even though they may sound harmless enough, can be very dangerous when mixed with certain medications.

The most commonly suggested vitamins for acne treatment are:-

Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, B Group Vitamins, Zinc and Chromium.

Vitamin A

Are you aware a deficiency in vitamin A can actually cause acne? Vitamin A containing carotenoids strengthen the protective the skin delicate tissue and helps prevent acne formation by reducing sebum manufacture. Vitamin A is important for the maintenance and repair of the skin tissue and tissues that  the mucous membranes are made of. Vitamin A is also a powerful antioxidant that relieves your body of oxidation stress caused by free radicals.

It is suggested you take up to 10,000 IU of vitamin A to effectively combat acne but don’t take more than 5,000 IU if you are pregnant. A top-quality liquid multivitamin is an effective source for vitamin A, in addition to the other vitamins that help with preventing acne.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is definitely an antioxidant that increases healing and tissue restoration. It prevents cell destruction by inhibiting the oxidation of lipids (fats) and the creation of free radicals. Take 400 IU daily of Vitamin E to fight acne.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C and bioflavonoids are an additional set of antioxidants that are required for not less than 300 metabolic functions within your body, including tissue growth and repair. Vitamin C protects against infection and improves immunity. Bioflavanoids have an antibacterial effect. The suggested dosage to battle acne is 1000 mg 3 times every day. If you have diabetes, heart condition, are on prescription medication or have pre-existing  medical condition ask a medical expert about the appropriate dosage.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of the easiest vitamins to get and it will cost you nothing. Vitamin D can be obtained by measured exposure to the sun. You can also get a supplement that includes Vitamin D but it is far easier just to focus on getting 15-30 minutes of sun exposure on you skin each day. Vitamin D can improve the over all appearance of your skin but be careful not to over do it.

Exposure to the sun for long periods can result in sun burn and skin damage and in worst cases can actually cause skin cancer. When you are getting your Vitamin D make sure that you do this when the sun is not at it’s peak, early morning or late afternoon would be a better time to get your Vitamin D. Make sure your skin does not feel too hot or if you notice a burning sensation discontinue immediately.

B Group Vitamins

A good Vitamin B complex helps you maintain healthy skin tone. These vitamins also help you relieve anxiety and tension, and stress might be a significant component which can trigger acne.

The vitamin B group contains Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (Nicotinic Acid, Niacinamide, B3), Pantothenic Acid, Pyridoxine (B6) and Cyanocobalamin (B12). Each of these vitamins has a unique function in promoting healthy skin, along with general health.

Thiamine acts as an antioxidant, enhances your circulation, and assists your body to correctly digest the food you eat. You should take 100 mg of Thiamine thrice daily to fight acne.

Riboflavin or vitamin B2 works with Vitamin A to maintain and improve the mucous membranes inside your digestive tract. It is also essential for healthy skin, hair and nails. Acne is one of the symptoms of riboflavin deficiency. The dosage of vitamin b2 recommended to fight acne is 100 mg, 3 times daily. You may find that this dose also helps with migraine headaches.

Niacinamide or vitamin B3 is also important for healthy skin by improving circulation and helping your system with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. A deficiency in Niacinamide will cause acne.

Pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 is noted for assisting lower stress, as a result indirectly reducing acne, which stress is known to cause. It is also necessary for the proper function of the adrenal glands.

Pyridoxine or vitamin B6 is vital in the functioning of your immune system plus your antibody production. A deficiency of vitamin B6 can result in acne.

Zinc

Zinc is one of the most commonly used vitamins for acne. It helps with healing of the tissues and helps prevent scarring. It helps prevent acne by regulating the activity of the oil glands. Zinc promotes a healthy immune system and the healing of wounds. Additionally it is an antioxidant which helps to combat and stop the creation of free radicals. Acne could be a sign of Zinc deficiency. The recommended dosage to combat acne is 25 to 30mg per day.

Chromium

Chromium aids acne by reducing skin infections rates. To get the adequate amount of chromium within your diet, you need to take liquid supplemental chromium called chromium picolinate or chromium polynicotinate. Odds are that you’re chromium deficient since the form of chromium in foods isn’t easily absorbed and is lost during processing. High quantities of sugar in the diet cause a loss of chromium from the body. The suggested dose to combat acne is 150 mcg per day.

  2. Hi Bev,
As a mother of teenagers with acne its good to know there are other solutions out there. My daughter is using pro active at the moment but I’m thinking I may even try some vitamins for acne treatment as well with her. Thanks for the information.

      Hi Jackie,
My teenagers have found that zinc has made a big difference, especially the boys. We all know that zinc is really good for males but has also had some really positive effects for my daughter’s skin as well. Of course, with plenty of the right foods and lots of water with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice added for extra vitamin C helps as well. It’s weird to begin with, but they crave it after a while and have even put fresh lemon juice in their water bottles for school. Another big change came when we agreed to cut out all junk food, highly refined foods and sugary foods.

    Hi Bev,
Acne is a major problem for young people and many would be ever so happy to receive the treatment advice in this article. Acne for a long time is known to be closely related to diet and related to what you eat. If true than it just makes good sense that vitamins are beneficial for the cure or for the reduction of the symptoms of Acne.

I know a leading skin specialists who also uses a zinc treatment on affected acne areas and she receives very good results in many cases. Especially of the parent follows her advice by drinking lots of water and eating healthy.

    Very informative, Jan. Thank-you.

Than You for your comment Jill,
Vitamins can be very beneficial to help treat acne but there remains no one miracle vitamin that works for everyone simply because the causes of acne can be so many and so varied. What causes acne in one individual can be different from the next, however, in saying that, it can only be good for you to eat lots of healthy fresh foods (lots of fruit and vegetables), drinking plenty of water and generally taking care of yourself. Totally cutting out Junk food can make a big difference.

  5. Hi Bev,

I love this site, and will be sending it to a few people! I discovered Adelle Davis when I was just leaving school (her original works) and the concept of diet and nutrition rings so very true. I really revel in knowing that I can eat myself to health. :) Just remembering to do it can sometimes be a challenge. ahh, but what a way to go!

      Thanks for your comment Jo,
I find the most difficult thing is time. I manage to buy lots of healthy foods but finding the time to cook can be challenging. I find it helps to involve the children in the food preparation, I try to make it fun rather than a chore and this also encourages and environment of communication where I can actually find out what is going on for them.
